Johnsons Hill Tunnel

25 Oct 2006

As part of the SH 1 Northern Motorway extension between Grand Drive and Titford’s Bridge near Puhoi, construction of twin tunnels through the Johnsons Hill is underway (Alpurt B2).

The motorway, project managed by Northern Gateway Alliance, will offer significant safety and time saving benefits to motorists. It will also help to relieve holiday time congestion and heavy traffic in Orewa and Silverdale. The new route will include a total of 5 bridges and twin tunnels through Johnson’s Hill.

Approximately 8 metres high, 12 metres wide and 345 metres long, the tunnels will also feature a cross passage at halfway. The tunnels will be concrete lined, fully lit, ventilated and have a fire protection system.

The southbound tunnel will have two lanes and the northbound tunnel will initially have one lane.

Olex will be supplying the electrical contractors, United Group Limited, with an extensive range of flame retardant cables from our Pyrolex® collection.
